HIV/AIDS - TCE

Total control of the Epidemic -TCE PROGRAM IN SOUTHERN AFRICA- awarded the UN Agfond Award for the best AIDS Program in Africa.

The Facts

53.1 million people have been infected by HIV/AIDS and 26 million of those are African living south of the Sahara. 18.8 million have died. There are 12 million children in Africa who have lost one or both parents to AIDS. In Zimbabwe, every five minutes another young person between the age of 15 and 24 is infected.

It is also a fact that HIV/AIDS is preventable through education, people can act to combat this epidemic when they have the needed knowledge about safe sex, testing, using of sterile needles, protection and attitude. If you want to take part in the fight against HIV and AIDS, you should join our TCE program!

What is TCE?

"Total Control of the Epidemic" (TCE) is a program created by Humana People in 2000 to fight HIV/AIDS in South Africa. The main principle of TCE is, "Only the people can liberate themselves form the epidemic". This program is designed to mobilize and bring the people into action, so that THEY can get control of HIV/AIDS and help each other to deal with the consequences. This program provides structure and leadership witch is organized like a military battle. Each country is divided in to small geographic units called fields. In each field the TCE officer together with local volunteers and development Instructors will campaign and try to mobilize the population to fight the epidemic in a variety of ways until the epidemic is under control. This is a huge task! We hope you will join us in it!

What can YOU do?

Your role as a "Special Force" within TCE is to train the TCE field officers and provide support and leadership to the entire program. The main working areas are to:

  • instruct in HIV and AIDS prevention
  • secure the operation in the TCE area you work in, e.g. make sure plans and programs are followed
  • mobilize and help the local volunteers carry out their community work
  • work with securing funds to the program through partnership in development
  • carry out broad banded public relations in the area
  • gather and process statistics
  • create possibilities for people who are HIV positive.

Plus specializing in one of the following: Public Relations, Fundraising, Communications, Statistics/Accounts/Administration.

The TCE program is complex and the work you will be part of is done at many levels.

How does TCE work?

The principles of TCE are basically to mobilize each and every individual in the community to KNOW and to ACT. Together with each individual, the TCE Field Officer makes a plan for what he or she must do to contribute in getting the epidemic under control.

Here are some examples:

  • The healthy must look after the orphans, grow vegetables for the sick, care for the terminally ill, counsel the youth, teach the children reproductive health and how to avoid getting infected.
  • The HIV positive must take good care of themselves. They need medicine, they must eat well and adapt a healthy lifestyle and have a good social network so they can live well for many years.

We invite you take part in this very needed effort in the fight against HIV and AIDS. As a member of the TCE program, you can make an active contribution in this field.

According to my experience I would suggest to every DI who is going to Africa to prepare yourself seriously to the project and be really creative with teaching, otherwise you will stick at one point and never move forward.
