General

Today poverty is still with us in a world so full of opportunities and wealth. 1.3 billion people live in extreme poverty (on less than $ 1.00/day) and nearly 3 billion live on $ 2.00/day. This is about half of the population of our planet. 40% of the world population counts for 5% of the global income.

At IICD we have decided not to be silent bystanders to it happening in the world of today when we can bring ourselves into a position where we can do something about it.
We believe it is the obligation of every single person to take this situation into their hearts and make the effort needed to bring about change so that all of our fellow human beings can live a dignified life with education, health, shelter and a full belly.

For this reason we started IICD Michigan. IICD Michigan is part of the international DRH (Travelling Folk High School) Movement - a group of training centers worldwide training volunteers who want to improve the lives of many less fortunate in the world.

At IICD we welcome you to join forces with others who have also decided to take part in this effort and stand shoulder by shoulder with the poor – in Solidary Humanism.

No one has a bigger interest of getting out of poverty than the poor, and in complete solidarity through their own efforts and our efforts as Development Instructors we can make this happen.

By gaining knowledge about many issues of the world today, deliberating and analyzing, working in actions, getting together and building comradeship, doing what is needed to be done and being part of running IICD, you will develop into a Development Instructor who is able to mobilize people, get things done, ready to do what is needed. You will be able to plan, work with economy, speak your mind and solve problems.

We invite you to participate in the Delevopment Instructor Program:
6 months training at IICD, Michigan
6 - 12 month volunteer work in Africa
2 months Camp Future (information period) at IICDMichigan

Humana People to People Movement

IICD, Michigan works together with Humana People to people, which is an international organization.
Humana People to People runs development projects in Africa, India, China and Latin America.

DRH-Movement

The DRH-Movement is a group of schools around the world that train Development Instructors, and Poverty Fighters.

Our Pedagogic Principles

Think in terms of teacher-student and student-teacher - that is, a teacher who learns and a learner who teaches - as the basic roles of classroom participation.

Weeks

At IICD we have 3 kinds of weeks; study weeks,
action weeks and fundraising weeks with each their characteristics and structure.

DmM

DmM is a Danish abbreviation that can be translated as “The Modern Method” and is a system of education developed and used by the entire DRH Movement and many schools in Africa as well.
DmM is first of all a human outlook, placing the participant at the center and as the main driving force in the learning. In order to facilitate this, the curriculum is available in a digital database to which every participant has access via a computer.

Solidary Humanism

The dehumanized human being, the dehumanized society must meet The Solidary Humanism. Man standing shoulder to shoulder with all mankind.

About Education

Today’s world is stuffed with knowledge. On a daily basis we receive so much knowledge and information that we are almost bursting.
Knowledge and information that for hundreds of years had only belonged to the “elite” is now available for a more “common ownership”. The communication tool of all times: the Internet, allows information and knowledge freely to change hands and cross borders.

Action Research

Action Research is a scientific working method whereby persons and groups can evaluate their own practice and improve it continuously.
Action research is a people oriented research approach that enables a group to analyze and improve its own practice.

Knowledge and Action

It's about the process of linking knowledge with actions for sustainable development

You get as much out of it as you put into it

The education and the life at IICD is created by each and every one of us with the thoughts, effort and demands we put into it. Therefore also by nature it is the thoughts, effort and demands you put into IICD, your team mates and the education as a Development Instructor which determine what you get out of the Development Instructor Program.

Meetings as part of the training

Meetings have their place. Formal meetings are a way to get the right people in the same place at the same time. A well-run meeting can get the right people together to make decisions or to discuss some item of common interest.
